Decoding the River Tees, whose name stems from the Celtic element ‘tēs’, meaning “warmth” and “boiling, excitement”. Later, it would earn a far bolder title: Steel River. The name of the River Tees is possibly of Brittonic origin. The element tēs, meaning "warmth" with connotations of "boiling, excitement" (Welsh tes), may underlie the name; a fortunate coincidence given its future, where the name Steel River was adopted due to the industry and engineering along its banks.
